FIELD BOARD NO.1
The Field Board
11” × 15” x 1.5” End Grain Walnut Cutting Board
The Field Board is built for daily use and designed to serve for generations.
Crafted from solid American black walnut using traditional end grain construction, each board is made one at a time in Texas and finished by hand with Vulpes Board Oil and Conditioning Wax. Note the pattern!
Unlike mass-produced kitchenware, no two boards are exactly alike. Wood is a natural material that expands, contracts, and moves with changes in humidity and temperature. Because of this, final dimensions may vary slightly from the listed size. These small variations are not defects—they are evidence that your board was built from real wood, not manufactured from synthetic materials.
Why End Grain?
End grain is widely considered the finest construction method for cutting boards.
When a knife contacts an end grain surface, the wood fibers separate and then close behind the blade rather than being permanently cut across the grain. This creates a surface that is:
- More forgiving on knife edges
- More resistant to deep cuts and scoring
- Better able to withstand years of daily use
- Naturally self-healing compared to face grain or edge grain boards
The result is a board that performs exceptionally well while developing character over time.
Built to Last
A quality end grain board is not disposable. With proper care, it can serve your family for decades and may eventually be passed to the next generation.
Wood requires occasional maintenance just as cast iron, leather, and quality tools do. Regular application of board oil and conditioning wax helps replenish moisture, reduce drying, and protect the board from everyday wear.
To maximize the life of your board:
- Hand wash only
- Never place in a dishwasher
- Dry thoroughly after cleaning
- Apply board oil when the surface begins to appear dry
- Follow with conditioning wax as needed
Ownership Is Maintenance
The Field Board was created for those who value craftsmanship over convenience and longevity over replacement. Built from solid walnut, finished by hand, and maintained with care, it is designed to become a permanent fixture in your kitchen rather than another item destined for a landfill.
