Vulpes Supply House was built around a simple belief: good things should be worth owning, worth using, and worth maintaining. We live in a world full of disposable products, cheap replacements, and things designed to be replaced rather than cared for. We wanted to build something different.
Every board that leaves Vulpes Supply House begins as a single piece American black walnut, one of the most distinctive and enduring hardwoods grown on this continent. Rich in color, character, and grain, walnut has been prized by furniture makers and woodworkers for generations. It offers the durability a working kitchen demands while remaining relatively forgiving to a quality knife edge, and no two pieces ever look exactly the same.
Vulpes Supply House is a small operation, and that is intentional. Each board is milled, shaped, sanded, finished, engraved, and inspected in our shop rather than pulled from a production line or imported by the container. We take our time because good material deserves good work, and because the finished piece should still be serving you years from now.
The Maker Behind Vulpes
Vulpes Supply House is owned and operated by a career fire service professional and longtime woodworker. I have practiced woodworking in one form or another for more than 20 years, building, repairing, learning, making mistakes, refining techniques, and developing a deep respect for materials and tools that are designed to last.
Working in the fire service has reinforced many of the same principles that drew me to woodworking in the first place. Equipment should be dependable, details matter, preparation matters, and the things you rely on need to be maintained. That mindset carries directly into the shop and became part of the foundation of Vulpes Supply House.
I am personally involved in the making of every board that leaves the shop. From breaking down rough lumber to milling, sanding, finishing, engraving, and final inspection, the work stays close to the maker. There is no anonymous factory behind the brand. There is a shop, a stack of walnut, and someone who cares whether the finished piece deserves your money.
Why Black Walnut?
American black walnut is not the cheapest wood we could use, and that is not the goal. We use it because it offers an exceptional combination of durability, workability, beauty, and character.
Its natural color ranges from warm brown to deep chocolate, often with lighter streaks and dramatic grain patterns running through the wood. Those variations are not defects to hide. They are part of what makes each finished piece genuinely individual.
We prioritize quality American-grown walnut and select our material for grain, character, and suitability before it ever becomes a finished product. The wood has already spent decades becoming what it is, and our job is to honor that rather than rush it through the process.
The Process
We mill, joint, and plane our lumber in the shop before each board is constructed, shaped, and progressively sanded until the surface and edges are exactly where we want them. Each piece is then finished with food-safe conditioning oil that brings out the grain and helps protect the wood through everyday use.
Before a board is packed, it is inspected by hand for its surface, edges, corners, joints, finish, and overall feel. Nothing gets shipped simply because it reached the end of the process. It has to be right.
It takes longer this way, and we think that is the point.
Made to Be Used
Our boards are not made to sit untouched on a counter. They are working pieces meant for chopping, carving, serving, and years of everyday kitchen use.
Knife marks will happen. The color will deepen and change. The surface will develop character over time. A quality wooden board is not supposed to remain frozen in the exact condition it arrived in.
With proper care, it should become better known to you.
That same philosophy extends beyond the boards themselves. Our wood-care products exist to maintain the pieces you already own. Our cast iron care products are meant to help keep a good pan working for years. Our household goods are selected with the same emphasis on useful design, straightforward ingredients, and products that earn their place in your home.
What We Make
Our boards are named for the places and purposes they serve. The Hearth Board is our flagship, a substantial working surface built for serious kitchen preparation and presentation. The Field Board is a versatile everyday workhorse, large enough for real prep without overwhelming the kitchen. The Galley Board is compact and purposeful, designed for smaller kitchens, quick prep, and spaces where every inch matters.
The sizes and purposes may differ, but the standard does not. Each piece is made with the expectation that it will be used regularly, maintained properly, and kept for years.
Small Batch by Design
We are not trying to fill a warehouse with thousands of identical products. Many Vulpes goods are made, finished, packaged, or prepared in small batches because that gives us control over the details that disappear when volume becomes the only objective.
That also means products sometimes sell out. We are comfortable with that. We would rather make something correctly than make more of it badly.
The Name
Vulpes is Latin for fox, an animal associated with adaptability, resourcefulness, and quiet intelligence. It felt appropriate for a company that values craft over flash, function over novelty, and thoughtful ownership over disposable consumption.
We are not interested in being everything to everyone. We are interested in making and offering things that are useful, well made, and deserving of the space they take up in your home.
Ownership Is Maintenance.
“Ownership is maintenance” is more than a tagline. A quality cutting board still needs oil. Cast iron still needs seasoning. Tools still need sharpening. Leather needs conditioning. Homes need maintaining.
The things worth owning usually require a little effort in return. We believe that is part of ownership, not a flaw in the product.
