Hearth Board No. 1

A substantial walnut end-grain cutting board built to anchor the kitchen.

The Vulpes Supply House Hearth Board No. 1 is handcrafted from American black walnut using traditional end-grain construction.

At approximately 14 × 20 × 2 inches, it delivers the size, weight, and working surface needed for serious meal preparation, carving, and serving. It is built for larger kitchens, larger meals, and customers who want one board capable of handling nearly everything.

This is not the board you hide in a cabinet and drag out twice a year. It is designed to live on the counter, take daily use, and become part of the kitchen.

Ownership is maintenance.

Built Around the Center of the Home

The hearth has always represented more than heat. It is where food is prepared, people gather, and everyday routines become traditions.

The Hearth Board was designed around that idea.

Its generous surface provides room for weeknight preparation, holiday cooking, large cuts of meat, bread service, and shared meals. It is functional enough for daily work and substantial enough to serve as a centerpiece.

Why End Grain?

End-grain boards are constructed with the ends of the wood fibers facing upward.

When a knife contacts the surface, those fibers can separate around the edge and settle back into place rather than being cut repeatedly across their length.

End-Grain Advantages

  • More forgiving contact with knife edges
  • Better at disguising normal scoring and cut marks
  • Durable enough for repeated chopping and carving
  • Thick, stable construction
  • Distinctive block patterns created by the walnut grain
  • Suitable for demanding daily kitchen work

Do not call it truly “self-healing.” That phrase is overused and technically sloppy. The fibers can close around light cuts, but the board will still develop wear and character over time.

Crafted from American Black Walnut

American black walnut provides the Hearth Board with its deep brown color, grain contrast, and substantial appearance.

Every board will vary naturally in:

  • Color and tone
  • Grain direction
  • Figure
  • Sapwood content
  • Block pattern
  • Light and dark contrast
  • Natural markings

These differences are expected in solid wood and make each board unique.

The board received will not be visually identical to the photographs.

A Serious Working Surface

The approximately 14 × 20-inch surface gives you space for:

  • Breaking down vegetables
  • Carving roasts, poultry, and brisket
  • Preparing large family meals
  • Working with bread and dough
  • Serving charcuterie and appetizers
  • Portioning larger cuts of meat
  • Organizing multiple ingredients during prep
  • Presenting food directly at the table

At approximately 2 inches thick, the Hearth Board has real mass. It stays planted during use and feels like a permanent kitchen tool rather than a lightweight accessory.

That size also means it is heavy. Customers should know that before buying it. Hiding the weight and scale would create returns from people who wanted a small board.

Available Configurations

Flat on Both Sides

Both working faces remain smooth and uninterrupted.

This option provides the largest continuous prep surface and allows either side to be used for chopping, serving, or presentation.

Juice Groove on One Side

One face includes a perimeter groove designed to collect liquid from meat, fruit, and other wet foods. The opposite face remains flat.

This is the strongest general-purpose configuration because it preserves one clean, uninterrupted surface.

Juice Grooves on Both Sides

Both working faces include perimeter grooves.

Choose this only when both sides will regularly be used for carving or wet ingredients. Otherwise, the one-sided option is more versatile.

Finished by Hand

Each Hearth Board is conditioned before leaving the shop with:

  • Vulpes Board Oil No. 1
  • Vulpes Board Wax No. 1

The oil penetrates the walnut and restores depth to the grain. The wax helps seal in that conditioning and leaves the surface smoother and better protected from routine moisture exposure.

This is a renewable oil-and-wax finish, not a permanent synthetic coating.

The board will require maintenance throughout its life. That is how real wood products survive decades of use.

Care Instructions

  • Hand wash only
  • Use a damp cloth or soft sponge
  • Apply mild dish soap when needed
  • Never soak the board
  • Never place it in the dishwasher
  • Dry the top, bottom, sides, and edges immediately
  • Allow the board to air-dry upright when possible
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, heat, or extreme humidity
  • Condition it when the walnut begins to look pale or feel dry
  • Apply oil and wax to every surface, not just the cutting face

A 2-inch-thick board can still warp or crack when neglected. Thickness is not immunity from bad care.

Moving and Storing the Board

The Hearth Board is larger and heavier than a standard household cutting board.

Lift it with both hands and avoid dropping it onto hard surfaces. Store it flat on a dry surface or upright with stable support and airflow around both faces.

Do not lean it near a stove, dishwasher vent, window, or other heat and moisture source.

Natural Wood Disclaimer

Solid walnut responds to humidity, temperature, washing, and seasonal conditions.

Minor changes in color, grain appearance, and dimensions are normal. Each board will have its own block arrangement, figure, contrast, and natural variation.

These characteristics are not defects.

Built for Long-Term Ownership

The Hearth Board No. 1 will develop knife marks, color changes, and signs of use.

That is not failure. It is evidence that the board is doing its job.

With proper cleaning, balanced drying, routine conditioning, and occasional refinishing, it can remain part of the kitchen for decades.
