The proven Field Board format, built around a more distinctive end-grain pattern.

The Vulpes Supply House Field Board No. 2 is handcrafted from solid American black walnut using traditional end-grain construction and a deliberately arranged block pattern that gives the board its own visual identity.

At approximately 11 × 15 × 1.5 inches, it offers the same practical footprint and substantial working surface as Field Board No. 1, but with a different grain arrangement for customers who want something more visually pronounced.

Each board is built one at a time in Texas, sanded and finished by hand, and conditioned with Vulpes Board Oil No. 1 and Board Wax No. 1 before leaving the shop.

It is made to work, not sit untouched as decoration. The pattern gives it character; the construction gives it purpose.

Ownership is maintenance.

What Makes No. 2 Different?

Field Board No. 2 shares the same approximate dimensions, walnut construction, and everyday function as Field Board No. 1.

The difference is the layout.

The individual walnut blocks are arranged to create a more distinctive visual pattern across the working surface. Because every board is built from naturally varied lumber, the exact grain movement, color contrast, and pattern will change from board to board.

That means your board will follow the No. 2 design style without being an exact duplicate of the product photographs.

The pattern is not printed, stained on, or artificially added. It is created through the selection, orientation, and arrangement of solid walnut pieces.

Why End Grain?

End-grain cutting boards are made with the ends of the wood fibers forming the working surface.

When a knife contacts the board, those fibers can separate around the blade and settle back into place instead of being repeatedly sliced across their length.

End-Grain Advantages

  • More forgiving contact with knife edges
  • Better resistance to obvious scoring
  • Durable construction for frequent chopping and slicing
  • Thick, stable working surface
  • Natural grain patterns created by the individual blocks
  • Better at disguising normal wear than many flat-grain boards

End grain is sometimes described as “self-healing,” but that language is exaggerated. The fibers can close around light cuts, but the surface will still develop marks through real use.

That is normal.

Built from American Black Walnut

American black walnut gives Field Board No. 2 its dark color, grain variation, and natural contrast.

Every board will vary in:

  • Brown and chocolate tones
  • Grain direction
  • Figure
  • Sapwood content
  • Block placement
  • Light and dark contrast
  • Natural markings

These differences are not defects. They are unavoidable—and desirable—when working with solid hardwood.

Sized for Everyday Work

At approximately 11 × 15 inches, Field Board No. 2 provides enough room for normal meal preparation without becoming difficult to wash, move, or store.

Use it for:

  • Chopping herbs and aromatics

Its approximately 1.5-inch thickness gives the board enough weight to stay planted without making it as cumbersome as the larger Hearth Board.

Available Configurations

Flat on Both Sides

Both faces remain smooth and uninterrupted.

This gives you the largest usable working surface and allows either face to be used for chopping or serving.

Juice Groove on One Side

One face includes a perimeter groove to collect liquid from meat, fruit, and other wet ingredients. The opposite face remains flat.

This is the most versatile option because it provides both a carving surface and an uninterrupted prep surface.

Juice Grooves on Both Sides

Both working faces include perimeter grooves.

Choose this only when both sides will regularly be used for carving or wet foods. Most customers will get more versatility from the one-sided groove.

Finished by Hand

Each board is conditioned with:

  • Board Oil No. 1
  • Board Wax No. 1

The oil penetrates the walnut and brings depth to the grain. The wax helps seal in that conditioning, smooth the surface, and slow routine moisture absorption.

This is a renewable finish, not a permanent synthetic coating.

It will require periodic maintenance. That is what allows a working wood surface to remain serviceable instead of becoming disposable.

Care Instructions

  • Hand wash only
  • Use a damp cloth or soft sponge
  • Use mild dish soap when needed
  • Never soak the board
  • Never place it in the dishwasher
  • Dry both sides immediately after cleaning
  • Allow it to air-dry upright when possible
  • Keep it away from prolonged sunlight and high heat
  • Condition it when the surface appears pale or feels dry
  • Apply oil and wax to every face, side, and edge

Only maintaining the top while repeatedly wetting it is bad care. Moisture needs to remain balanced across the board.

Natural Wood Disclaimer

Every Field Board No. 2 will have a different combination of walnut color, grain movement, and block contrast.

The exact pattern will vary because the design is built from natural wood rather than printed or mechanically duplicated.

Natural variation, minor dimensional differences, and seasonal movement are expected and are not manufacturing defects.

Built for Long-Term Use

The Field Board No. 2 is intended to develop character.

It will collect knife marks. The walnut may darken or change tone. The surface will show evidence of the meals prepared on it.

A quality board is not supposed to remain untouched. It is supposed to remain useful.

With balanced cleaning, thorough drying, and routine conditioning, this board can remain in service for decades.
