Field Board No. 1

A compact walnut end-grain cutting board built for serious daily use.

The Vulpes Supply House Field Board No. 1 is handcrafted from solid American black walnut using traditional end-grain construction. At approximately 11 × 15 × 1.5 inches, it provides a substantial work surface without taking over the entire counter.

Each board is built one at a time in Texas, sanded and finished by hand, and conditioned with Vulpes Board Oil No. 1 and Board Wax No. 1 before it leaves the shop.

This is not a decorative board pretending to be kitchen equipment. It is a working surface built for chopping, slicing, carving, and years of regular use.

Ownership is maintenance.

Why End Grain?

In an end-grain board, the ends of the wood fibers form the cutting surface. When a knife contacts the board, those fibers can separate around the edge and settle back into place rather than being repeatedly sliced straight across.

That construction gives the Field Board several practical advantages:

  • More forgiving contact with knife edges
  • Better resistance to obvious scoring and deep cut marks
  • A durable surface suited to repeated daily use
  • Greater thickness and stability than lightweight commodity boards
  • Distinctive grain patterns created by individual walnut blocks

End grain is not magic and it is not literally self-repairing. It will still develop marks with use. What it does offer is a more resilient working surface that generally hides and absorbs wear better than many face-grain boards.

Built from American Black Walnut

Walnut is valued for its dark color, visible grain, and balanced working characteristics.

Every board will vary naturally in:

  • Color
  • Grain direction
  • Figure
  • Sapwood content
  • Block pattern
  • Tone and contrast

Those differences are not defects. They are the reason a solid-wood board has character instead of looking mass-produced.

The board you receive will not be visually identical to the product photograph.

Sized for Everyday Work

The Field Board No. 1 is designed to sit between a small utility board and an oversized butcher block.

Its approximate 11 × 15-inch surface is well suited for:

  • Daily vegetable preparation
  • Slicing and chopping meat
  • Bread and sandwich preparation
  • Fruit and cheese service
  • Smaller carving jobs
  • Everyday counter use

At approximately 1.5 inches thick, it has the weight and presence of a serious board while remaining easier to move and store than a larger block.

Available Configurations

Standard

A flat working surface on both sides.

This is the most versatile configuration and allows both faces to be used for cutting and serving.

Juice Groove on One Side

One face includes a perimeter groove intended to catch juices from meat, fruit, or other wet foods. The opposite face remains flat.

Juice Grooves on Both Sides

Both faces include perimeter grooves.

Choose this only if you specifically want grooves on both working surfaces. For most customers, the one-sided groove option is the better balance because it preserves one uninterrupted flat face.

Finished by Hand

Each board is conditioned with Vulpes Board Oil No. 1 and Board Wax No. 1.

The oil penetrates the wood and replenishes the grain. The wax helps seal in that conditioning and leaves the surface smoother and better protected from routine moisture exposure.

The finish is renewable rather than permanent. It will need to be maintained over the life of the board.

That is not a flaw. Permanent film finishes do not belong on a working cutting surface.

Care Instructions

To protect the board and reduce the risk of cracking, warping, or excessive drying:

  • Hand wash with a damp cloth or soft sponge
  • Use mild dish soap when needed
  • Never soak the board
  • Never place it in the dishwasher
  • Dry both sides immediately after washing
  • Allow it to air-dry upright when possible
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight or high heat
  • Condition it when the surface begins to look pale or feel dry
  • Oil and wax all faces and edges, not only the top

Neglecting the underside while repeatedly wetting the top is how people create uneven moisture movement and then blame the board.

Natural Wood Disclaimer

Solid wood responds to temperature and humidity. Minor movement, changes in tone, and slight dimensional variation are normal.

Each Field Board is unique. Grain, color, figure, and block arrangement will differ from the photographs.

Small visual variations are evidence of natural material and hand construction, not manufacturing defects.

Made for Long-Term Ownership

The Field Board No. 1 was designed for customers who value durable materials, repairable finishes, and objects that improve through use.

It will collect marks. It will change color. It will develop character.

That is what working tools do.

With proper maintenance, this board can remain in service for decades rather than becoming another disposable kitchen product.
