Galley Board No. 1

A dependable walnut cutting board built for the work that happens every day.

The Vulpes Supply House Galley Board No. 1 is handcrafted from American black walnut using traditional edge-grain construction.

At approximately 11 × 15 × 1 inch, it provides enough room for daily meal preparation without becoming heavy, awkward, or difficult to store. It is built for chopping vegetables, slicing fruit, preparing sandwiches, carving smaller cuts of meat, and serving food directly at the table.

This is the practical workhorse of the Vulpes cutting-board collection: lighter and more affordable than a thick end-grain board, but still made from solid hardwood and designed for years of proper use.

Ownership is maintenance.

Why Edge Grain?

Edge-grain cutting boards are made by arranging long strips of wood with the narrow edge of each strip facing upward.

This construction provides a strong balance of durability, weight, appearance, and value.

Edge-Grain Advantages

  • Lighter and easier to move than thick end-grain boards
  • Durable enough for everyday chopping and slicing
  • Displays the long natural grain of American walnut
  • Easier to store and clean than an oversized butcher block
  • Suitable for both meal preparation and serving
  • More accessible in price than end-grain construction

Edge grain is not as forgiving on knives or resistant to visible scoring as end grain. Pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Its strength is practical everyday performance without the weight or price of a larger butcher block.

Crafted from American Black Walnut

Walnut gives the Galley Board its deep brown color, natural contrast, and distinctive grain.

Every board will vary in:

  • Color and tone
  • Grain direction
  • Figure
  • Sapwood content
  • Strip arrangement
  • Natural markings

Those differences are part of solid wood. The board you receive will not be an exact visual duplicate of the product photographs.

Built for Everyday Kitchen Work

The Galley Board No. 1 is sized for the tasks that make up most meals.

Use it for:

  • Slicing vegetables and fruit
  • Preparing sandwiches and lunches
  • Chopping herbs and aromatics
  • Portioning cooked meats
  • Bread and pastry preparation
  • Cheese and charcuterie service
  • Everyday countertop prep

The approximately 1-inch thickness keeps the board substantial without turning it into a heavy block that becomes annoying to wash and store.

Available Configurations

Flat on Both Sides

Both faces remain smooth and uninterrupted.

This is the most versatile version because either side can be used for cutting, prep, or serving.

Juice Groove on One Side

One face includes a perimeter groove to catch liquid from meat, fruit, and other juicy foods. The reverse remains flat.

This is the strongest all-purpose option because it gives the customer both a carving surface and a clean flat surface.

Juice Grooves on Both Sides

Both faces include perimeter grooves.

This configuration is only worth choosing when the customer expects to use both sides primarily for carving or wet foods. Otherwise, it sacrifices the clean flat face for no real benefit.

Finished and Conditioned by Hand

Each Galley Board is finished with Vulpes Board Oil No. 1 and Board Wax No. 1 before leaving the shop.

The oil conditions the walnut and brings depth to the grain. The wax helps slow moisture absorption and creates a smoother, maintained surface.

This is a renewable oil-and-wax finish. It is not a permanent synthetic coating and will require routine care.

That maintenance is what allows the board to remain useful instead of being discarded once the surface starts looking dry.

Care Instructions

  • Hand wash only
  • Clean with a damp cloth or soft sponge
  • Use mild dish soap when needed
  • Never soak the board
  • Never put it in the dishwasher
  • Dry both sides immediately
  • Air-dry upright when possible
  • Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight and high heat
  • Condition the board whenever the surface looks pale or feels dry
  • Apply oil and wax to the top, bottom, sides, and edges

Washing one side repeatedly and ignoring the other is a reliable way to encourage uneven moisture movement and warping.

Natural Wood Disclaimer

Walnut is a natural material and no two boards are identical.

Color, grain, figure, strip arrangement, and minor dimensional variation are expected. These are not manufacturing defects.

Solid wood also responds to humidity and temperature. Small seasonal movement is normal.

A Practical Board, Not a Disposable One

The Galley Board No. 1 is not the largest or most expensive board in the Vulpes line.

That is the point.

It is built to be the board customers reach for every day: manageable, useful, durable, and worth maintaining.

With proper care, it should develop character rather than becoming trash after a few seasons.
